ST. DOMINICK'S COLLEGE, DUNEDIN.

The distribution of prizes to the pupils of St. Dominick's College, Dunedin, took place on Friday afternoon in the refectory. The Right Rev. Dr. Verdon presided and there were also present Rev. Father Murphy, Adm. St. Joseph's Cathedral, and Rev. Father Ryan , vice-rector Holy Cross College, MosgieL After the reading of the general report on the progress, diligence, conduct, etc., of the individual pupils, the pnzes were distributed, the recipients being warmly applauded. The wreath for amiability was awarded on the votes of the pupils to Mies Geraldine O'Connell. At the conclusion of the distribution his Lordship congratulated the pupils on the work done during the year, and expressed pleasure at hearing that they had been diligent and that their conduct had been very good. While enjoying their holidays they should remember the good example set by their teachers, and the encouragement they had given them in the practice of virtue and the leading of holy

lives. In conclusion his Lordship counselled the pupils to avoid bad and senseless literature and to read only good and useful books, and trusted they would come back from their vacation in the enjoyment of exoellent health prepared once more to enter on another year of active work. A very fine display of work by the Benior pupils was shown in the study hall. The exhibits included landscapes and panels in oils and art needlework. The exhibition was extremely creditable to teachers and pupils, and was well worthy of the reputation enjoyed by the college in this branch of education. A.mong the more noticeable works were a panel by Miss Edmonds and a music ottoman by Miss Eileen Ward in French embroidery. There were several cushions worked in French embroidery, arrasene, Mountmellick, and perline by Misses Brennan, Millar, McDougall, and F. Clarke, and Miss Guffie was represented by, among other articles, a hand-painted cushion. There were shown fire screens by Miss McGregor, a pretty Spanish lounge and fire screen by Misa Guffie, and a fender stool by Miss Kelman. Miss Carmody had a music ottoman in Mountmelliok work. There were some very artistic specimens of flower studies, the principal exhibitors being Miaa McDoogall, Guffie, McDonald, Clarke, Ward, G. O'Connell, Dunne, and Mrs. Milne. Landscapes in oils were represented by specimens from the brushes of Misses McDonald, Guffie, Ward, N. Joyce, all of which displayed considerable merit. A number of drawings were also shown, the work of Miss Kelman being worthy of special mention. Very nice samples of white needlework were also on view, those by Misses A. McDougall, M. Tobin, and M. Byrne being very good. In the kindergarten section the variety of work turned out by the pupils was remarkable, and included box modelling, embroidering in silk, weaving in cane and chip, paper laying, clay modelling, etc. The following were Borne of the more prominent specimens of work : — A pattern in silk by Patricia Toomey ; a suite of doll's furniture, Molly Coughlan ; clay modelling, Joseph Petre ; a cane basket, Ila Henderson ; bead embroidery, Ellen O'Connell, Vida Finlay, Dolores Mac Donald, Constance Petre, and Gladys Barley ; cane weaving, Bella Laffey, Mary Walsh, Jack Collins, and Molly Coughlan ; painting, Mary Walsh, Ivy M'Donnell, and Annie Keily ; weaving in paper, Zita Campbell and Eric Campbell ; outlines in silk, Eric Campbell ; weaving in chenille, Dolores Mac Donald ; paper baskets, Rachel Johnßon ; ring knitting, Vida Finlay ; weaving in cloth, Zita Campbell and Bella Laffey ; weaving in chip. Vera Myer ; and scrap book collections by Vida Finlay, Rachel Johnson, Gladys Barley, Maggie Maher, Kitty Byrne, Annie Keily, Ellen O'Connell, and Bella Laffey.
