The work of planting the grounds of the Convent at Masterton is fast approaching completion, and the general appearance of the building and well kept gardens is a credit to the Sisters The examination of the Masterton Catholic schools by the Government Inspector, Mr. Lee, was held this week. As the schools are said to be in a flourishing condition, good results are anticipated. Headings from various authors were given at this week's meeting of the Marist Brothers' Old Boys' Association Literary and Debating Society. Owing to the inclement state of the weather the attendance was small. A meeting of the committee of the Marist Brothers' Old Boys' Association was held to consider the holding of a gymnastic carnival and social. After some discussion it was decided that, owing to the lateness of the season, the matter should be deferred. Arrangements are to be made for the holding of their annual sports and picnic on the 9th of November. A well-known colonist, Mrs. Patrick Scully, died recently at her residence in Woodville. The deceased lady was well known and widely respected throughout the Thames and Otago gold fields districts. The funeral was the moßt representative ever seen in Woodville. Two children survive her, a son and a daughter, the latter being Mrs. P. Corby, of Newtown. — JR.I.P I regret to have to record the death of Mr. Charles Gibb?. which occurred at his residence, Featherston Terrace, on Thursday morning last. His sufferings of nine years were borne with great patience and resignation, and his end was not unexpected. During his last illness he was attended by Rev. Father Holly, who administered the rites of the Church. His death occurred at the early age of 44. Hiß remains were interred at Karori to-day, when Rev. Father Holly officiated. He is survived by a widow and nine children.— R.I P.
