INVERCARGILL.

(From our own correspondent.)

July 2. A meeting of the leading parishioners was held at St. Mary's on the Ist inst. re organising matters in connection with the erection of the new church here.

The local Catholic Literary Society's Football Club, so successful last year though its first season in the field, has reached the climax thi« «p a *on It has not as yet been defeated. Constant gymnasium practice, under the guidance of the Rev Brother Dunstan, i«> accountable for this phenomenal success. The Japanese Festival and Bazaar, which has occupied the attention of the Catholic congregation of the Bluff for a considerable time, was opened formally by the Mayor (Mr. J. H. Reed) on June 27 for a term of four nights. About 500 people were present at the Drill Hall to witness the opening performance. At an interval during the evening an orchestra, under the baton of Mr Slater, rendered lively selections from the ' Mikado.' The tableau 'Rule Britannia' presented a very rare and pretty sight, being much enhanced by the aid of limelights. After this a Japanese march by a number of children formed a complete spectacular demonstration, and was loudly applauded by the vast audience Much credit is due to Mr. Millar for the efficient manner in which he has trained the children. The Highland Fling (in costume) danced by six young ladies from Invercargill, was one of the favorite items of the evening, they having to submit to an imperative encore. A hornpipe was then danced by Masters McGrath and Griffin in a clever and masterly manner. The Christy Minstrels were the centre of much amusement A tno sung by Mesdames Murphy, Walker, and Miss Sinclair was much appreciated, being encored several times. The business of the bazaar was carried out in an energetic and systematical manner. The following is a list of the different stalls and stallholders : — Drawing-room : Mrs St George, and Misses Cameron, Goff, and St. George ; Fancy Goods Stall : Mrs. McGrath, and Misses Gilroy, Metzger, and Hamilton • Bachelors' Stall : Mesdames Rose, Maclntyre, and Misses Gilroy and Hamilton ; Kiopk : Mesdames Sullivan and Finuerty and Miss McCarthy ; Doll Stall : Mrs. Holton and Misses Rose and McGrath • Flower Stall : Misses McCarthy and St. George ■ Lolly Stall • Misses Finnerty, Gilroy, and McGrath. The dresses of one and all of the ladies were exceedingly artistic. It must be gratifying to the clergy and organisers of this bazaar that it proved the greatest financial success of the kind yet witnessed at the Bluff.
