St. Patrick's College brass band made its first public appearance for this year on the morning of St. Patrick's Day. Allowing tor the short time the band has been formed and the large number of beginners a most creditable exhibition was given. Miss J. Ewart, who for the last six years has been an attendant at the Wellington Asylum, leaves on a visit to Scotland next week, bhe was presented with a handsome dressing case on her leaving the institution. The Manst Brothers' Old Boys' Association Dramatic Club is busily engaged rehearsing the ' Colleen Bawn ' under the direction of Mr G Harpur. The drama is to be performed on the 28th inst. in aid of the schools, and some excellent scenery from the brush of Mr. G. Hoskins is to be used in the production. The result of the election of the Licensing Committee here came as a surprise to the majority of electors. The temperance party nominated five candidates, but though strenuous efforts were made in their behalf, not one of its nominees succeeded in getting a place, the five ' moderates' who formed the last committee being reelected. 8

The water supply question is causing the civic authorities here some anxiety owing to the reservoirs at Wainui-o-Mata and Karori now containing less than half their average quantities. Noeiety'spared no pains in their endeavour to make their annual sports meeting on ht Patrick's Day a success, and, considering the exceptional counter attractions their efforts were rewarded in a manner that not even the most sanguine could have anticipate! The Premier, during the afternoon, delivered a short speech in which he congratulated the Society on the successful gathering. Never had thrre been in Wellington he said, such a splendid celebration of the feast of St latrick. A recent English mail brought news of the death at the rine age of SO years of Mr. William Low is. father of the Very Rev h ather Lewis, S.M., Administrator, Tnorndon. On Tuesday mornin" a Solemn hvquum Mass was celebrated in St. Joseph's Church for the repose of his wml. Father Lewis was celebrant, Yen Archdeacon Devoy, and Rev. Fathers O Shea and Herbert acting as deacon sub-deacon and master of ceremonies respectively. A strong choir consisting of the College Father*. Measr*. Rowe, Cimino, D Rvan McManaway and Can- chanted the Gregorian lletniinn Rev' Fathers Mahony and Moloney King the • 0 Salutaris Hostia ' Rev' father Kimbell ajted as organist. All the boarders of St Patrick 8 College and St. Mary's Convent, most of the children of the Orphanage, with several of the Sister.* of Mercy were present as well as many other residents from both parishes of Te Aro and Inorndon.
