The Very Rev. Dr. Pestre, S.M.. provincial of the Marist Fathers, -who has for some time been in the South Island, visiting the various houses of the Order, returned north on Tuesday last.
The Very Rev. Dean Grogan. S.M., parish priest of Napier, parsed through Christchurch on Wednesday last on a visit to the southern capital. His Lori-hip the Bishop commenced in the Pro-Cathedral on Sunday la-tat Vespers a scries of Lenten lectures to a crowded congregation on the subject of the Ten Commandment". During the stay of the Fn nch man-of-war ' Eure' in port the ship's compary atrondol Ma»s at St. Joseph's Cburch, Lyttelton. T no captain and officers paid their respects to the Right Rev. Dr. Grimes, and were entertained by his Lordship. A well-attended meeting of the Cathedral building committee was held on Tuesduy evening la&t. presided over by his Lordship the Bishop, when various matters requiring attention were considered. On the Thursday afternoon following the ladies' committtee met and transacted a considerable amount ot business.
The prayers of the Pro-Cathedral c mgreeration were asked on Sunday for the repose of the soul of the Rev. Father Chareyre, t>.M., parish priest of Christchurch between the year- IS7I and 1877, who died recently in Paris. Father Chareyre was after the departure of Bishop (now Archbishop) Croke from Auckland, nominated to the vacant See. but prevailed upon the Holy See to allow the nomination to be withdrawn, his great humility forbidding him to accept it.
