The Byrnes public Memorial Fund, Queensland, has now reacted £1000, the Brisbane subscriptions of £900 having been supplemented by the receipt from Rockhampton of a cheque for £100 17s. There is still a picturesque element in Australia, (writes the Catholic Press), even if we must go to the west for it. It is outlined in the following wire from Kalgoorlie : — ' Banking accommodation was afforded at the Boulder to-day for the first time, when the Commercial Bank of Australia opened a branch here. A rush was made to open accounts, and in the afternoon, when the bank closed, the manager his receipts was escorted to Kalgoorlie by a procession of customers armed with rifles.'
