He contracted a cold which he has not been able to shake off, and, acting on medical advice, he paid a visit to Wanganui, whence he returned last night after an absence of a week, much improved by the change. Mr. John Madigan, who has been conductor of the Catholic choir here for many years past, has taken his departure from amongst us for Ashburton. He is a highly-skilled musician and vocalist, and his loss will be much felt by the Catholics of this town He was presented with a beautiful set of carvers on the eve of his departure by the members of the Garrison Band, in recognition of the valuable services he had rendered them as band-master. His Grace the Archbishop and the Rev. Father Ainsworth have been holding a mission at Waipawa since Saturday last, the 23rd inst. The ceremony of blessing the new school was performed on Tuesday, after which the children, in a most creditable manner, rendered several musical and vocal items.
