September 21. Rev. Father Gillan, of St. Benedict's, preached a very fine sermon on the ' Mater Dolorosa ' on Sunday night at St. Patrick's. The Rev. Father Golden has for the time assumed temporary charge of Parnell parish, the Rev. Father Kehoe requiring a few weeks' respite from parochial duties. A most comprehensive scheme for harbour improvement has been submitted to the Auckland Harbour Board by Mr. Napier Bell Next Tuesday, at a special meeting the Board is to discuss it. Mr. J. W. Foy, the esteemed secretary of the Thames branoh of the Hibernian Society, has been again returned to the Thames Borough Council for the South Ward, having polled 150 votes, while his opponent scored but seven. The Auckland Catholic Cemetery Board, at its meeting in St. Benedict's presbytery last Friday evening, decided to ask the VicarGeneral to appoint a Sunday on which day a special collection for cemetery improvements be made in the city and suburban churches. Rev. Father Aubry, S.M., Provincial of the Marist Fathers in Australia, arrived last Sunday by the Manapouri from the South Sea Islands, where for the last three months he has been visiung the various stations. He gave Benediction in the evening at St. Pat. rick's, and on Monday he left in theWestralia for Sydney. The pupils of the Sacred Heart School, Ponsonby, under the care of the Sisters of Mercy, gave an excellent entertainment last evening in their schoolroom. It was of a varied character, and was very creditable alike to teachers and pupils. A number of the clergy were present. A complimentary ticket was forwarded to ' your own' for this entertainment, a courtesy noc generally shown. From Napier the local Press publish a Press Association wire stating that since the Catholic schools have been examined by the Government Inspector, numbers of children have nocked to the Catholic schools, and the leakage in the public schools is most apparent. Time after time the Auckland Education Board has refused to allow its inspectors to examine our Catholic schools. Now we have the reason, and Napier supplies it? The results of the local examinations in theoretical music, held in Auckland on June 10, under the auspices of Trinity College, London, came to hand on Tuesday.
