Thepupih of St. Mary's Convent High School, Gisborne, gave a very successiul concert in the Academy of Music on Tuesday evening, the 11th in&t. Notwithstanding the unpropitious weather there was a very large attendance. A capital programme was submitted, Oays the local Jfcnrirf), and each item was well received, applause being frequent during the t:\e-iing, whilst in several cases encores were demanded. The proceedings were opened with the Maypole chorus and dance by the pupils of the school, the following taking 1 part : — Misses I. Harding, L. Nicholson. M. Nicholson, K. Martin, A. Simson, A. Robertson, It. Barry, A. Coote, N. Murphy, to. Martin" M. Clark, D. LSooth, N. Donovau. L. Power, L. Brosnahan, and E*. Simeon. The young ladies were tastefully dressed, and went through their performance in capital style, their efforts being recognised by the audience, who insisted on an encore. The several other choruses during the evening were splendidly rendered, and included ' The Elfin Call,' ' Dreaming of Home and Mother ' 1 Birdie's Come,' 'The Gipsies,' 'The Merry Merry Sunshine,' 'The Piay t'ul Kittens,' and 'The Harp That One -Thro' Tara'sHall!' The tambourine drill and dance, and the Cauch ucha dance were amongst the most successful items on tho programme, both exercises being gone through in a careful manner, good time being observed. Misses Sweet and Liddell contributed a pianoforte duet 'Gondolied,' and Miss Duwnes a pianoforte solo, ' The Shepherd's Evening Song,' both pieces buinyr well received. Miss Power gave a succeflsf ul rendering of ' The Arab's Farewell to His Steed.' Mibses Harding and Martin contributed a pianoforte uuet, ' Fairies Wedding Waltz,' and Misses Sweet, Handing, and Liddell a trio. ' Norina.' Miss Dora Booth pleased the audienue with her violin selections, which were much appreciated. Misses Nellie Murphy and Mabel Clarke gave a pianoforte duet, ' Messenger of Love,' lor which they were deservedly applauded. The o.her items were, pianoforte solo, ' Moonlight on the Lake,' Misa Irene Harding ; vocal duet, ' Whispering Hope,' Misled Maggie and Linda Nicholson ; pianoforte trio, 'Martha,' Mi.sses Devery, iSiinson, and Robinson : violin solo, MissLillie Power ; pianoforte solo, • Christmas Bjil-.' Miss Elsie Sweet. The latter also contributed a s-cond h olo, ' Mozart's Sonata in G,' which was exceptionally well treated and loudly applauded. Miss Lizzie Power recited • Euiuburgh After Flodden,' which was most clearly given. One of the most suoco&sf ul items of the evening was — th« solo, ' The Child Angela ' by Mhs Linda Nicholson, an encore being demanded. The concert throughout was a most enjoyable one and reflected great credit up >n tiie promoter^, who must have devoted considerable paina in order to get tne pupils to such a state of proficiency. The beautiful i.ew convent at Gisborne is fast approaching completion. The building which promises to be a very fine one, stands on a site of three acres and is quite an ornament to the Kaiti Suburb. The opening will probably cake place next month.
