DIOCESE OF DUNE DIN.

A very enthusiastic celebration of the centenary of the Irish insurrection of 1798 was held in the theatre, Invercargill, on Wednesday, November 30. There was a very large attendance, every part of the theatre being well filled. Apologies were received from Mr. Gilf eider, M.H.R., and Mr. W. S. Mit jhell, of Five Rivers (cousin of the Irish patriot and historian, John Mitchell). Among the visitors were Fathers J. F. O'Douuell (Quaenstown), Fouhy (Laidley, Qaeenslaud), O'Donnell (Bathurst, N.8.W.), and Cleary (editor of the N.Z Tablet). Stirring speeches were delivered by the Very Rev. Dean Burke, Rev. J. F. O'Donnell, Mr J. A. Hanan, (barrister, Invercargill), besides a brief address by Rev. H. W. Cleary. A particularly acceptable musical programme was provided. The instrumental selections were supplied by the orchestra of the Catholic Young Men's Society. The vocal portion of the programme, which was very attractive, was provided by Mrs. Blue, two strong choruses, the Misses Anthony (duet), and a well-trained body of nine young lady vocalists, pupils of the convent school. An extended report of the proceedings, with (we trust) a photoprocess group of the coiimittee, will appsar in our next issue. On Fridiy last a fine entertainment was staged at the Foresters' Hail. Port Chalmers, by the pupils of the Sisters of St. Joseph. It consisted of pianoforte selections (solos, duos, trios), recitations, part songs, action songs, choruses, scarf and dumb-bell drills, a cantata ('The Flower Queen ')> two farces ('My Aunt's Heiress 1 and 'Sambo's Blunders'), and a negro scena. There was a good attendance, and despite the great variety of the bill of fate, the performance reached throughout a high level of excellence and kept the audience from start to finish on the gui vive. A detailed report will appear in our next issue.
