The II". A. Jlrrord has the following under the heading ' Catching a Tartar : —

A jirojtox of the tree lock-up to which in another place we refer, a pioneer resident of the goldfields has related to us an incident that once came under his observation. It happened that, in a certain locality, the Warden had sentenced a woman to a month's imprisonment. The lock-up, however, rot being convenient for the fuir sex, and no gaol being within many leagues, his Worship graciously infor.ned the prisoner that she might go home for the night and abide there until it was possible to provide elsewhere properly for her penal accommodation. The offer was met by a flat refusal. The prisoner had been sentenced by the law, and the fiat of the law she swore should be duly carried out. The upshot was that compliance had to be purchased by an order for rations to the amount ot the month's supply that the prisoner should consume if she were bent to gaol. To catch a Tartar, it appears, does not always belong to the realms of fiction,
