NEW ZEALAND : GENERAL.
Wii learn from an esteemed correspondent that the Palmerston South Art Union has been an unqualified success. The drawing- of prizes took place in the Town Hall on the afternoon of March !.">. His Worship the Mayor presided, and the leading citizens of Palmerston assisted at the function. The proceeding's were watched with great interest by a large concourse ot people. The prizes are pretty well distributed all over the country. The first prize goes to Alexandra. We learn with much pleasure that the Art Union realised £400. This splendid result will now leave the mission almost free of debt. Father Lynch and his people nrc to be congratulated, while a word of praise is due to the generosity of those of every class and creed who so willingly and to generously contributed towards such a noble cause. ACCORDIXU to promise the winning numbers in the art union for the Waipawa Catholic Church are published in our advertising columns of to-day. Wl-; have received .')()() used postage stamps from Mary Tarrell. Crown Hotel, Geraldino, anil a parcel from Mrs. Hurley. Riverton. in aid of Father Kreymborg's mission. We have also received irom Mr. Percy Browne (Dune-din) a quantity of stamps (old and new). and 500 u«cd stamps from a little friend. Miss Kathleen Agnes C.irroll (Lyell). Fkom an esteemed correspondent at Waimate we learn that the Convent of Blessed Peter Chanel has been very much improved lately by the addition of a chapel of 20ft x 1-1 ft. It contains a very neat altar as well as statues of our Blessed Lady and St. Joseph, a complete set of Stations of the Cross, and other requisites. A beautiful carpet, the gift of Mr. A. McLean, coveis the floor and adds much to the beauty of the chapel. Last Monday (continues our correspondent) we were honoured by a visit from his Grace Archbishop Redwood, who was returning from the University Senate which met recently at Dunedin. On the following day Very Rev. Father O'Reilly, of the Thames, Auckland, visited Waimate and left for the north on Wednesday. Father O'Connell, who was recently appointed to assist Father Regnault, is displaying great zeal and en< rgy, and is fast becoming very popular. One of the good works which he has already undertaken is the establishment of an Altar Society. He got almost sixty members at the first meeting, and all unite m the hope that he will long remain in Waimate.
Always take the paitof an absent peiscm who is c n-ured in ojmpany, bo far as truth aud proprie'y will allow.
