THE ADDINGTON STOCK MARKET

Christchurch, March 9,

There were large yardings at the Addington stock market today, and business throughout, though nob very keen, was fairly brisk. The entries for the comprised 17,537 sheep and lambs, 506 head of cattle, and 5 1 8 pigs. Fat Cattle — 185 head formed the week's supply. The beef was of a mix< d character, containing two or three extra prime sorts and some very inferior stuff. Anything really prime met with keen competition, but other sorts were hard to quit, and there was an exceedingly dull sale. Two show beasts were as good as anything seen in the yards for a long time, and commanded considerable attention ; a three-year-old steer fetching LI 2. and a heifer Lid 10s. The general run of steers brought L 4 5s to L 8 10s ; heifers, L 3 15a to L 0 ; cows, L 2 17s Gd to L 4 15s. Per 1001 b, prime beef brought 14s to 16s ; good, 12s Gd to IBs Gd ; cow and inferior, down to 10s. A medium yarding of cows and springers was a very mixed lot, and only the younger and better sorts met with competition at up to L 6. Fat sheep were well represented, there being a few good lines of freezers and one or two exhibition consignments, as well as a fair proportion of good young trade ewes. The sale throughout was animated, the presence of a new buyer for the local trade making things rather lively for anything extra prime, and all good sheep showed an improvement on late salts. A pen of half bred Southdown wethers bred by Mr. 8. Garforth realised 30s. apiece, and an- , other pen of the same owner's Southdowns changed hands at 265. Freezing wethers brought lls to 13s (id : mixed sexes 10s to 12s; butchers' bust crossbred ewes. Dh to 10s Gd ; medium, 7s to 8s ; and aged, 4s Gd to Gs.

Fat Lambs. — The pens were fairly well filled, and a number of nice quality lines were eagerly sought after by exporters — a line of 2.">0 from Sir John Hall's Hororata estate being taken for freezing at 10s Bd, and an extra good pen (Mr. S. Garforth's Southdowns) making 11s 9d. Good freezing lambs maybe quoted from 9s to 10s Sd, butchers' sorts from 7s to 8s Dd, and more backward sorts from 6s.

The bulk of the pig-s were stoics, but the fats included some very good line 1 ?. Competition for all classes was exceedingly keen, and prices showed a further advance. Baconera brought from ',V.)a to 05s, a line of 14 fetching 63s 6d ; porkers, 24a (id to 39s ; stores. 1 3s Gd to 255. and up to 39s for some extra large ; weaners, 7s to 1 2s,
