OBITUARY.
One of the few remaining " old West Coasters'" of the days of 186.") passed away suddenly on the Feast of the Holy Name in tin- person of Mr. Thomas Ryan, late of Rangiwahia and Cheltenham. The deceased was about (!0 years of age. and, at the inquest on his remains the medical evidence showed that his death wa« due to heart failure. The deceased was held in high esteem by people of all classes and creeds among whom he had lived. The attendance at the funeral was considerable, and a telegram of sympathy was received from the Right Hon. 11. J. Seddon. Father Patterson accompanied the funeral procession and officiated at the Catholic Church, Fcilding.and also at the grave. — it. 1 P.
With much regret we record th^ d< ath of Miss Ellen Deborah Courtney, on December 21), at the early age ot :53 years. Miss Courtney, who was the eldest daughter of Mr. James John Cmrtney^ East Belt. Christchurch. met about fouiteen years airo w.th a serious accident which rondertd her a confirmed invalid. Bit notwithstanding this misfortune she took actne part in pirochial matteis the poor in her neighbourhood being the especial objects of her attention. The Rev. Father Rafferry said a Jln/uirm Miss tor the repose of her soul at the Pro-C.ithedral. and the Vicar-G-eneral oiticiated at the grave where he delivered an address on tle ranny good qualities of the dicea«ed lady. — U.I. P. Mr. John Mcliride, an old and rejected resident of Fr.mkton, Wakatipu, died there recently atter a long and painful illness. Deceased was a brother of Mt ssrs. Daniel. Francis and Alexander Mcßride, and was familiarly known by his many friends as - Uncle John."' Deep sympathy is felt for his relations throughout the d strict.— U.l P. Mr Carroll Nash, of Upper Thames district, has passed away to his long home. He was a man of considerable mt ans, and in his will holias not forgotten the needs of his parish, and of the diocese I in general. — J'.l.P. Major l'atrick Monaghan of Karoii. an old sdlior. an old snttkr, and a splendid type ot colonist, pa— ed away on January Kith, aged seventy-eight years. He came to Auckland in IS I.') as a priv,ite"of the <!.">th Regiment, and had some 1 air-breadth escapes in the Wanganui and Parihaka native troubles of I S I ">. IS4 7, and 1 S-H>. Later on in life he obtained the i.mk of major in the New Zealand volunteeiv. He settled down in IS 11) to farming pur-nits, and took an active interest in public affairs, being elect* d by his fellowsettlers to many important positions. He was interred on January ISth. with full military honour*. The Very Rev. Father Dawson oilitiated at the grave. — li.J P.
