CHRISTIAN BROTHERS' SCHOOL.

On Friday morning the pupils of the Christian Brothers assembled in the main hall of the building to assist at the closing ceremony of the scholastic year. The room was tastefully decorated with flowers and bannerettes. The Bishop being unwell, the Rev. Father Murphy presided. The Revs. J. Delaney and N. Moloney were also present. The Brother Superior read the following report :—: — Rev. Father, — 1 will read for you the report of our school for the year now about to terminate. V\ c have now 1!K) boys on our school roll. During the year the boys have given us great satisfaction by their general good, conduct, their diligence at their studied, and the regularity with which they attend to their religious duties I am glad to be able to state that the great majority of the older pupils are monthly communicants. Early in the year a class of 2[ boys was prepared for their first holy communion, and later on a similar number was got ready for first confession. Though some of the boys are very irregular in attendance, still I can say that the great body of them are remarkable for their regularity — a large number not having 1 missed a single day from school during the year. To Master John Hungerford. who has been present every day for three years, and Master N. Ryan, who has been present every d;.y for two years, we have awarded the prizes of six months' free tuition, offered by Mr. Ro^hbotham in. his school of shorthand and typewriting. The dux of the school this year is Master J. 15. Cullan, to whom is awarded the dux medal. At the close of last year we sent up four boys for the university matriculation examination and all of them were successful. All, moreover, passed the solicitors' general knowledge examination. For the civil service examination we presented seven boys, all of whom passed. The gymnastic classes, under Mr. J 0. Smith, made excellent progress during the year, though heavily handicapped by the want of a suitable gymnasium. We entertain a hope that the want will be supplied before the close of the coming year. We offer Mr. Smith our be*t thanks for his untiring attention to the classes and for the two silver medals which he has given. We return our thanks to the following for their kind donations to the school prize fund : — Rev. Father Murphy. H.A.C.B. Society, Mrs. O'Xeill, Mr. Keligher, Mr. Gourley. Mr. J. B. Callan, Messrs. Kempthcrne. Prosser and Co . W. Scoular and Co.. Nimmo and Blair, P. Hay man. P. Cotter, M. Coughlan. F. Lawrence. Neill and Co., F. Meenan, T. Heffern;m (South Dunedin), John Carroll, D. Beard, Briscoe ane Co., Hutton. Miss Murphy, and to Mrs. Jackson for a large quantity of sweets. In conclusion, we desire to thank his Lordship the Bishop for the kind interest he has taken in the school, and the clergy for the unremitting attention they give to the spiritual wants of our pupils. Father Murphy, having distributed the prizes, expressed his ir^ret that the Bishop wls not present to listen to the very flatteiiii^ report that had ju&t been read. It was pleasing to the clergy to know that the senior boys were so attentive to their religious duties and he hoped they would continue so when they left school. The results of the matriculation and civil service examinations referred to in the report were highly creditable, and showed the care the Brothers take of their pupils. He hoped the boys would always co-operate ■with the Brothers, and retain for them affection and gratitude. If the Bishop were present he would say a great deal more. lli-> frequent visits during working hours had enabled him to see exactly the progress that was being" made. He had always expressed himself highly pleased, and he considered the school was advancing r.ipioiy under the present efficient staff. The holidays having been announced, and cheers having" been given for the Bishop, the clergy, the Brothers, and the dux, the proceedings terminated.
