V AR IA.
The Irishwoman and the Parson. — Mr. White, president of the League ot the Cross at Accrington, tells an amusing tale of a dear old Irishwoman just come over from Ireland, who sallied forth to church with her beads to hear Mass. She entered the first church she came to, and began sa\ mg her rosary, when the parson came up and said to her, •• I think you have made a mistake. This is not a Catholic Church." -Sure, in the name of God, what is it, then .' " said she. "It is St. Luke's Protestant Church," ".Sure," said she '' I've only left Old Ireland three days, and St. Luke was a Catholic then." English as she is wrote. — In order to illustrate " English as she is written in the carnages of the Belgian State Railways," a correspondent sends- to the JJmli/ Ttln/raph the following copy of a notice in the carriage*. — ■•Alarm Signal and Safety Brake. — To put the alarm signal in action and stop the tram, pull forcibly the button to you. When pulled from its place, the button can only be removed by an agent ot the tram. Any person putting the signal alarm in action without due cause, w ill be liable to judicial pursuits." But the following recent communication lrotn a continental house of business is. perhaps, equally elegant . " Beilin, in the August, 18H6. Dear Sir-, — Since we do not let travel over England in this year, we take the liberty to beg your direct transmission of estimable orders and to remit jnu some iio\elties ot tins year. We enclose account, from which 30U will see further all.
