WESTLAND .
(From our own correspondent.) General regret was expressed here at the sad intelligence of the death of Master Frank Kennedy, second son of Mr. Martin Kennedy, who died recently in London. This is. indeed, a sad ending to the trip home undertaken by Mr. and Mrs. Kennedy. Deceased was a fine bright boy well known here, being a native of this town. Death has again visited Mrs. Sheedy's family, her eldest brother Edmund Toohill having died last week at the Thames. In the early days of the coast he resided at Charleston and Okarito. The amount required for plastering our church, Cl.'SO, was subscribed at the two Masses on Sunday week : of course this is but a trifle to the expensive and enduring works carried out by the Catholics of this parish under the guidance of Rev. Father Carew, S.M. But in the^e times could any other denomination of equal numbers raise £130 in a few hours, yet in the face of facts such as these some people, t» whom the wish is father to the thought, declare that the zeal of Catholics for their Church is on the wane. Mr Terry, assistant clerk of the court here, is to be congratulated onhis promotion to the position of clerk of the court. Naseby It would be hard to find a more obliging official than Mr Te rrv and his promotion was well deserved. Dr. James Mcßrearty has settled down permanently at Brunnerton. The district mentioned offers a large field for the young medico's abilities and he bids fair to become as popular at Brunnerton as his worthy father Dr. Moßrearty is in Greymouth. On Sunday last at both Masses Rev. Father Carew. S.M.. announced that a collection would be taken up next Sunday for the Mount Magdala Asylum. The rev. gentleman sketched the good work that was being accomplished by the heroic Sisters of the Good Shepherd. Indeed the good Sisters are entitled to the kelp of all Christians.
