DUNEDIN CATHOLIC LITER ARY SOCIETY.

THE nsaal weekly meeting of the Dunedin Catholic Literary 8> ciety was held last Friday evenicg in 8t Joseph's schoolroom. There was a good attendance of members and Mr C. B. Haughton V.P., occupied the chair. Before starting the programme for the evening Mr O. B Haughton in a few rery appropriate renmki thanked the Society for electing him to the position of vice-president, and be urged all the members to try and be as punctual as possible in their attendance daring the coming session and if possible to each of them to bring up a new member to the Sooiety. Hj also strongly uigsd all who had since last session attained their civic mi joriy to register at once. The programme which consisted of the following items was then gone on with. Mr J. A. Hilly contributed a reading entitled " The agitation for Catholic Emancipation," by Henry Latcbford, which proved to be fall of interest to all present, as it dealt wi»h the principal figures who took part in that memorable straggle which ended as is now a matter of history in one of the greatest victories ever gained by political agitation. Mr H. McOormack con'ri uted a paper on " Tbe Advanced Woman." Tbe paper was well written and full of humour end was thoroughly enjoyed. The next item was a selection from Sir Walter Scotia Marmion by Mr P. Oarolin, who rendered this difficult piece in a very artistic manner and showed that tbe « happy state " he entered into last session has not impaired in the least his dramatic abi'ity. A hearty vote of thanks on the motion of Mr G. Hesford, seconded by D. Falkner was given to the above named gentlemen for the very fine night's entertainment they had given all present. Messrs J. Black, T. Oostello, P. Carolin, J. Hally and the chairman also complimented them for their fine performances. There will be no meeting next Friday night. The next meeting will be on Friday, May 8:b, when Mr 0. E. Hanghton will deliver a Bhort lecture entitled, " Parliamentary sketches at home and abroad." The usual compliment to the chair concluded the business.
