SOCIAL AT THE THAMES.

(Thamet Advertiser, September 18.) One of the most successful social functions of the season took piece in the Academy last night when a crowded audience assembled to give a helping hand to tbe funds of tht Roman Oatholic Church which iB bo popularly represented here by Father O'Reilly. The following first-class programme was gone throngb to the great delight of the listeners, who recalled most of tbe items : — Overture, Missel Styak and Rickitts ; songs, Mrs Bruce, "Waiting" ; Mr Stewart, "John Wellington Wells " ; and Mr Paul, " Over the rolling wave " ; Mrt Truscott gave '' Tit for Tat" in a very arch manner being ably supported iv tbe tableau portion by Miss Garvey and Mr Mahoney a One of the most taking pieces waa a duet, Miss E. McDonald and Master Goldenstedt, wbo even at this early age exhibits considerable dramatic talent, inherited, doubtless, from his gifted mother. A duet, "Life's dream is o'er," was tastefully given by Mrs Truscott and Miss Koefoed. Misß Ditnpier, of Auckland, gave two violin solos in splendid style and w<s lou ldly recalled for boh. During the evening two veiy beautiful tableaux were given by a bevy of fair damsels, who performed their parts without a hitch, and reflected great credit on their instructors. At the conclusion of the programme Father O'Reilly ascended the platform, and though evidently affected by the warmth of the greeting he received, he in a few well chosen words thanked all who had conspired to make the evening such a thorough success, anl was particularly happy in his recognition of the good hearted ness shown by members of other churches, butb by their attendance and also assistance in a variety of ways. Refresh-

menta were handed round to the visitors, and the ÜBual dance brought a most enjoyable evening to an and by midnight.
