THE CONVENT SCHOOLS, NAPIER.

{Evening Nemn, December 14.)

At the break-up of the Convent High School yesterday afternoon the school hall was crammed with parents and friends of pupil?, and a splendid programme comprising music, recitations, and other suitable itemß was gone through. The piano playing, especially in the concerted pieces with Bix and eight pianop, was really Bplendid, and indicated that the system of tuition adopted in the musical work of the school is as sound as that pursued in tho teaching of art. The Rev Father Grogan and Sir W Wasteneys distributed the majority of the prizes. Some, however, were handed to the recipients by Mr 6 Carnell, M.H.R., who, in the course ot remarks (which he made atthe request of the pariah prifst), spoke in high terms of the quality of the instruction imparted in Catholic schools.

We paid a visit of inspection to the parochial school this afternoon. One of the apartments is filled with the work of the pupils for the past year. The results achieved are surprising. Beautifully worked cushions, frames, and other delicate articles are displayed to advantage, and one can realise at a glance the time and pains expended by the teachers in bringing the attainments of the pupils to such perfection . Visitors expressed their surprise, and we have no doubt these annual exhibitions are a convincing proof in the minds of parents of the superiority of the Convent schools. Later a large number of parents and friends assembled in the larger room, where a goodly number of prizes were on view. The children, neatly dressed, gathered with happy and smiling faces to participate in the long looked for event of the year. A well selected and appropriate pro. gramme waa submitted, and then came the distribution of prizes under the supervision of the Rev Father Grogan, visiting clergyman, and the Lady Superior.
