DIOCESE OF CHRISTCHURCH.
The following ciroular has been addressed to the clergy, by his Lord* ship the Bishop :— Dear Rev Father,— You have already received the circular addressed by the bishops of New Zealand to all the priests of this Col jay. It is to be read and explained to the faithful, who should be reminded of their solemn duty of Bending their children to our Catholic school?, when not farther distant than three milea from their homes. You will also receive by this mail a touching appeal for Mount Magdala. It was written by the Cbristchurch correspondent of the New Zealand Tablbt, Ii embodies a deal that I hai intended to say to you about that noble institute. Ba good enough to tell your people that tbe colled ion prescribed in this dircese on Rosary Sun. day will be taken up on that day in all the churches and chapels in behalf of the home of tbe Good Shepherd at Mount Magdala. You may read from tbe printed appeal, what, in your wisdom «td charity, yon deem most appropriate to rouse tbe generosity of your respective flocks. Once read it should be affixed together with the Bishop's circular to or near the church door. It will again remind our faithful people of the wonderful work so wonderfully performed day after day by a few heroic spouses of Christ for poor souls sprinkled with the Blood of tbe Spotless Lamb. This telling appeal, added to tbe eloquent words wherewith you will not fail to put forth the claims of the devoted Sisters, and their dear children of Mount Magdala, will, I trußt, cause this yeai'a collection to exceed any ever made on Rosary Bunday. Let us not forget that practical love for oar neighbour shonld go band in hand with the love of God Himself. Does not the inspired penman assure us that " to love one's neighbonr ia a greater thing than all holocausts and sacrifices 1 "
You will continue to pray and ask the prayers of your congregation for the venerable Biihop of Dunedin, who still lies in a precarious state. Hie Lordship desires me to thank 7011 and yonr devoted flock for the many and fervent prayers you have Bent op to the throng of God in his behalf. Wishing you and yours every blessing,— l remain, dear Bey Father, jours faithfully in Christ, f J. J, Gbim*B, S.M., Bishop of Chrietchurcb. Ohristchurch, Feast of our Lady's Nativity, September Btb, 1894.
