DUNEDIN CATHOLIC LITERARY SOCIETY.
At the meeting of the above Society, held on Wednesday, Jtroe2f, tha rev president occupied the chair, and over 30 members were present.
There was one gentleman nominated for membership, Mr J HicksoD, on the motion of Messrs J. B. Callan and P. Hally.
On the resumption of the debate on the dethronement of James 11., Mr J. B. Callan and Mr McCormack spoke on the negative, and Mr J. J. Connor on the affirmative Bide. Mr Petrie, who had opened the debate, replied in a very telling speech which evidently convinced the waverers, and his motion, " That the dethronement of James 11. was not justifiable," was carried.
A continuation of a paper, descriptive of his trip to Wellington, was given by Mr Oarolin, in the shape of a short address, which was conducive of considerable amusement as well as information.
The Rev Father Lynch read a piece from Balmes' " Criterion," dealing with rules that might be observed with advantage in reading history, and after a short discussion on the forthcoming debate en the land policy of the present Government to be held under Parliamentary rulep, the meeting tormina' ed.
