LYTTBLTON.

(From a special Correspondent )

Ox Sunday, tha 17th of June, at tb.9 requast of tha Rev Father Salvador, the Vjr7 R3V Fa'her Cutnnn^s, tag amiable V.G. of Christchurch, delivered a moit interesting ail eloquent sermon on devotion to the Sacred Heart to a verp large and appreciative audience in St Joseph's Catholic Church. The church was beautifully decorated for the occasion. Tha improvetn'nts eff -ced therein, since the present pastor took chirge of tha pirish, r flict tha greatest credit on him.

On Thursday, the 21st Juae, being the feast of St Aloysius, a special service took place for the occasion of tha Rev Mother's feast day. A large congregation of parents and children attended Mass and Benediction, Father Salvador officiating. Tha singing of Bordese's M*bs by tht Convent school children was really in excellent style, and reflected very great credit on the good Sisters of Merjy.

The children then invited Ray Muther to alitt'e concert prepared for the occasion, followed 07 a proven ation of a handsome statue of St Aloysius. The creditable m^na^r in whica tne f«jw selected items were carried through ia an evidence of th 3 paiustaking and ability of the Sisters. At the close of the entertainm jnt the children were invited by the Sisters to partake of some refreshments, and haviag done full justice to the good things provided, they enjoyad themselves for the remainder of the day. Tbia incident reminds me of a remirk passed a few weeks back by Father Salvador in the church, when, eulogising the good dispjsitions nnl gooioniujt of the Cinvent school children, he said, " He bop^d thair their elders would not prove a hindrance to them by setting before them a bai example."

On Sunday, the 24th June, notwithstan ling the wat weather, a very large congregation attended first Mas*, and en masse responded to the appeal which their pastor made on the previous riuud ay, to conclude the month of June by receiving the Sacrament of Eucharist. In fact, it was very edifyiag and consjhng to witness so many approaching th« altar rail The zjalous and h )ly pne-it of the African mission, Father O'Sullivan, addressed the people in the morning on the laborious aud mnntoriom work of the African mission in a very eloquent spedch, and in the evening on the devotion to the Mother of God.

Diptheria is very prevalent amongst the children ia Lyttelt&n and we regret to chronicle the demise of two children of two respee'ed citizens, Messrs Hiordan and C. MacConville ; ihe former lost a bright and promia'njj girl of 8 years.

A quiet and Chiistian marriage to >k place on the 6th June in 8t Joseph's Catholic Church between C. O'Brien and E Banford. The bride was given away by her father. The happy couple went to spend their honeymoon down south.

The Licin he Committee meetng was held onjthe 21st June, and their final verdict closed three pub , ao'l thereby cast adrift at least h'x families on the world p»nail> si and hopeless. As nobody is permi ted access to the Stuta Sinctorum of these meetings, which more or le s ar<i always involved ia sora • knl of mystery, I feel juet'ti d to p iB3 8 ime remark on their vi r i c , which, under the circumstances, se-ms not to be f-iir and impartial, 'ihe restriction L cansing Act is the in -miff's ation of the will of the people, its acting committee bas been elect, d by the people ; the (Joujcil represent the people, yet we have t> witntss one public house left unmolested in a place where it ia nit wanted, and a respi ctible hou>e w.th trood nccommodation and badly n quired for ihe wants of the western and southern part of (bo town, close 1. Ob, the mystery of those committees are impenetrable I The chairman is a conscientious man and should investigate the matter
