CATHOLIC BAZAAR AT PORT CHALMERS.

A BAZAAB in aid of the building fund of the Church of 8t Mary Star of the Sea was opened yesterday evening in the Garrison Hal], at Port Ghalmere, under the auspices of the Rev Father O'Joonell and a large and influential committee of ladies and young people, one and all of whom vied in their efforts to make it a success. Tne' ball w«« beautifully decorated, flaes, flowers, and ferue being artistically disposed at all points of vantage. The st.ge and proscenium was artistically draped, while the drop scene, painted by Mr A. Aoderror, and lepteaentiog a view on Loch Lomond, is worthy of great praise. '
There were four large stalls— two on either side of the ha 1— while close to tbe stage was a well-fitted and amply supplied refreshment Btall, at which presided Meadames Gioati, He ler, Albertson, Anderson, with the Misses Day (2), and O. Kaoe. Tbe side s'alls were filled with a multiplicity of pretty and useful articles.
In No. 1 Stall, which was in charge of Mes-iames Cnliinp, Millar, and Meade, with the Misses L Mjrkane, M. Dtamm, KutU, Innes', Dale, Miller, ODea, King, and Junes, was a similar d splay. No. 2 Stall was presided over by M^a Bjrlase, assisted by the MUses Boaner, Leonard, M. Banner, Smith, Coneys, L. O.nejs, Milei, Ryan, Martin, and L. Smith. This stall was filled with a beautiful assortment of paintings, ornaments, fancy gooJs, aud a number of very nseful articles.
No. 3 S all was taken charge of by Mesd^imea Heller, Gioiti, and Lynch, with tbe Misses Diy, Cashtnan, A. Morkane, and Horuby. Tniß Stall was charmingly fitted up and fi led with a tasteful aad welN assorted supply of goods. Tnrou^huut iha baz iar no hing was i ffered for sale but that which was both uief jl and ornamental.
No. 4 Stall, at the upper end, wia in charge of the Misses Nelson, Fergusßon, Clarke, Oarr, Kemp, and Hope. This compartment was
very tastefully fitted op, and contained oil- paiatingp, needlework, «nd fancy goo *s of every kind.
Tbe proceedings were opened at 8 p.m. by his Worship the Mayor (Mr E. G Allen), who expressed the regret he felt at the absence of Bishop Moran through indisposition. In the course of his remarks his Worship spoke favourably of the bazia', an I the cause for which it was worthily g >t cp
A floral procession followed, in which little children were drawn through the hall in cars decorated with floral emblems of tbe United Kingdom, the little lady who represented the genius of England being greeted by a verse of " Rule, Britannia," ably sung by Miss M. Infield. Scotland was honoured by •• Auld Lang Syne," and the sister Kingdom by « The Dear Little Bhamrock," all of which Mist Infield sang with great taste. A Majpole dance was rendtred by a large number of little children, who were (mined by Mr D. Mair. After this the business of the bazaar proper was proceeded with,* under tbe guidance of tbe fair Btallho derp, and a very brisk and exciting time ensued. The great feature of the evening, however, was ihe " Pinafore Quadrilles," arranged by Mies A. Sharp and Mr D. Marr, in which a large number of children took p»rt, tbe »ocali»ti being :— First Lord, Master Joseph Ward ; Cap'ain Ooroor»n, Master Sal er ; Dick Deadeyp, adaster Benoett ; iinlph B- cks'raw, Master U. de L. Graham ; Buttercup, Miss Suiter ; Mr* Cripps Miss lufield : Joseutme, Mi-,8 White. The acompaniste was Miss Sharpe, and the director and stage manager Mr Marr. Before the close of the proc e-iings the kiev Father O'Donnell thauked those present for their attendance.
