AD MATREM.
FOR THE FEAST OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION. (From tbe Australian Meaenger), O fair the sunshine 'mid broad leaves Of swaying vines swift-glancing I O fair the rose by cottage eaves, And wind-tossed lilies dancing ! But fairer far, sweet Mother Maid, Thy soul , so meek and lowly : It kuew no pinful spot or shade, All peerless 'twas and holy. O purest, dearest Mother, now Our hearts with jay are leaping, Though earth has many a gloomy brow, Much sorrow and much weeping. Tib come, 'tis come, thy festal day I The kindly sun is glowing, And love of thee drives care away, Love tender, glad, o'erflowing. — — — — MiW#
The farmers of the Highlands of Scotland, known as Crofters, do not like eviction, tbat is, being robbed of the fruits of tbeir labour, any more than do tbe farmers of Ireland. In the Highlands, as in Ireland, eviction means robbing tha tenant of what has been created by his industry, viz: the fmitfulness of the soil. This tbe Crofters ate at present resisting in very en rgetic fashion, as we learn from a London c jrrespondence. "The Qaeeu's writ," says the correspondent, "is being defied, and the minions of the law are maltreated. Sentries with foghorns are posted in strategical p mtions to warn the country side of the approach of tbe police and the sheriffs, and disguised men and women pelt the officers witb fihh and stones, and tear up the roadways." To at is tue sort of work that has been going on for some time in Scotland, yet we have not beard fr m the D ke of Argyll any denunciation of the Scotch as "criminals unfit for selfgovernment," though he is very foad of denouncing the Irish as such. — Irish World.
