MR ARTHUR SALVINI'S CONCERT.
This concert, which took place in the Princeso Theatre, Dunedin, on Thursday eveniug, waa, from a musical point of view, very enjoyable. The extreme cold of the night, however, seemed to have interfered with the attendance, and did anything rather than minister to the comfort of the audience. ladeed the Tbeitre in its present form appears especially adapted for the creation of draughts, " The McGr.'eror's Gathering " with bag-pipe effects, '• Tom Bowling " and "My Queen," were Mr S<tl vim's solos, each an 1 all of which were very finely sn g. A slight boirsene^ in the singer's lower notes waa apparent— bat the accidental defect detracted little from the merit of the performance. The dramatic expression an 1 spirit with which the Scotch song was sung were in particular most admirable. Mr Salvini a'so took part with perfect buccjfs in a duet " Excelsior, 1 ' with Mr Harry Smith ; and in two quartettes. .Mrs William Murphy aaug as solos, with much sweetness, " Caller ou " and " Killarney." Miss Rose Blaney sang with her usual charm of voice and method " Mary of Argyle " and " O Erin my country." Mr Harry Smith's solos were • •The pilgrim" and "The village blacksmith," io each of which he was heard to advantage. He also sang with Mrs Murphy th« daet, D^nz^'s " Nocturne." The instrumentalists were Miss Lily Cameron and Miss Nina Schlotel, anl Mr J McK^ohnio, senr. Miss Cameron played as a piano bolo, with fiae spirit mi great elasticity of finger, Kowalski's " Marche HongroHe.' 1 Miss Hchlotel gave a graceful interpretation on the violin of Raff's cavatina, and was quite as successful in a performance of a mazurka by Wieniawski, until the snapping of a string put an untimely end to the strain. Mr J. McKechnie, senr., played on the pipes the music of a sword dance, danced with infinite skill and agility by Mr J. McKecbnir, junr. Two double quartettes were effectively sang. The concert concluded with Sir Arthur Sullivan's comic cp-retta " Box and Cox," ia which Messrs W. McLaughhn, J. Armour and C. Eager, acted aad sang with intelligence and spirit.
