THE WATERFORD ELECTION.

London, Dacem ber 39, 1891. Contrast to all expectation the election in Waterford on the 23rd met., to fill the vacancy in the Home of Commons caused by the death of Mr Bichard Power, resulted in a sweeping Parnellite victory. The polling was conducted without any serious disturbance. The official account shows that Mr John E . Redmond (Parnellite) received 1,775 votes and Mr Michael Davitt (MoOartbyite) 1,229, a majority of 516 votes for the Parnellite candidate. At the last election Mr Power was returned without opposition. The announcement of the official figures was followed by a scene of the wildest enthusiasm. Mr Redmond was hoisted upon the shoulders of hii friends and borne about in triumph. Mr Redmond and Mr Davitt started this afternoon for Dublin, A detachment of hussars escorted Mr Davitt to the railway station, and Mr Redmond was escorted by a large number of his supporters and several bands. This is the first bye-election won by the Parnellites sinoe the split in the Irish party occurred, and they are correspondingly jubi. lant. Davitt counted firmly on the full support of the labour vote in addition to the regular vote of the party, bat the labour vote was either cast against him, or else maintained a neutral attitude and remained at home. The minds of the leaders of both Irish factions are at present too much excited to admit of anything like reconciliation.
