Cardinal Lavigerie has, Bays the Weekly Register, had a happiness rarely enough enjoyed by missionaries in Islam. Five Mohammedans from an oasis of the South arrived in Algiers with their shiekh to ask for baptism at the hands of the Cardinal Archbishop. They are stated to be men of education and of considerable authority. A drill-sergeant of one of our most distinguished regiments of the L'ne was recently in charge of a batch of recruits when he received instructions irom his commanding officer to ascertain the religious persuasion of each of his men. For this purpose the recruits were paraded ; and in the stentorian tones which drill-sergeants all do cultivate, the order was given : " Fall in 1 Church of England men on the right ; Roman Catholics on the left ; all fancy religions in the rear I"— \anity Fair.
