There are nearly 300 Catholic Arabians in St. Louis, Mo. Tbe Bey. Mr Carter was very safe in declaring that the use of ether did not prevail most among Catholics. On the contrary, the Counties where it is most exclusively used are noted S3 the most Protestant and Orange in Ireland. In Catholic regionß the vile and dangerous stuff is unknown, and long may it so continue. We do not say this with any spirit of boasting. It is sad enough to see Protestant Irishmen given over to a terrible vice. But this ether drinking with the effects attributed to it by tbe Rev. Mr Carter serves to explain the virulence of the Orangemen. It has long prevailed among them, and to it are doubtleradoe many of tbe savage outrages they have been exoited to perpetrate upon Catholics. When the wine's in, the wit's out. Ether cot only dethrones reason, bat also introduces several devils,— JVfcw York Fret man.
