THE CEUVRE EXPIATOIRE AT LA CHAPELLE MONTLIGEON, ORME, FRANCE.
(New York Freeman's Journal.)
Ih 1884, M. L'Abbe Bugutt, cure of La Chapelle Montligeon in the diocese of Sees, preseat°d himself before his Bishop to submit to the judgment and approval of (his philanthropic Prelate, a project to found in his parish an association in f ivour of the Jorsaken touls in Purgatory. The Bishop, whose noble and sympathetic heart appreciated th.9 true charuy which animited the supplian', and the sublimity cf the work that he proposed to inaugurate, at onca granted bis petition.
October sth, 1884, with the benediction of Mgr. Tregaro, M L'Abbe Buguet received the approbation of the " Statutes of the (Eavre Expiatoire."
From that date, the little vilhage of Montlig urn became a source from which each day prayers aud oblation* have fl>wji to go an! refresh the burning atmosphere of Purgatory.
Since 1884, the (Eivre Expiatoire of Montlig;oa,has taken a prodigious extension ; t v ie Princes of the Church hnve placed themselves under the banner of Our Lady of Purga'ory, with a crown of one million nine hundred thousand faitiful of all couatriea and cocditions. The Old and New World, with the Islands ol Oceania, have joined this holy crusade. But, althjugh so far extended, this magnicent work is still ignored by many Christians ; therefore, as through prejudice, needless obstacles are often raise! in the way of raising works, to prevent any mitconception, it is necessary to explain the aim of the CEuvre Expiatoire.
Placed under the patronage of the Blessed Virgin, the purpose of the work is to relieve and deliver the greatest number of souls from the fires of purgatory, but its prayers and oblations are more
especially raised to God for the moat abandoned there, for those of whom no one tbioks, for whom no one prays, and to whom no hope remains except to satisfy Divioe justice.
Bvery month, the (Havre celebrates more than three thousand Matse* by means of the subscriptions of the associates, (really the total last year was 46,000). The modest sum of one half-penny yearly is all that is required to become a member, and participate in the merits of all these Masses, and tbe number will be increased as the resources permit. A bulletin (in English) appears every two months, and an interesting monthly journal (in French) carries to all parts of the world, news of the association.
Christians, listen to its plaintive cry : " Have pity on us ! Have pity on us I you at least who were our friends, for the hand of God has touched as I Make to yourselves friends of the Mammon of iniquity, that when you shall fail they may receive you into everlasting dwellings." The spiritual benefits of this Association are great, tbe means required to share in them very tmall, but we cannot enumerate all its advantages in this notice to know them. We must refer our readers to its " Summary of Indulgences," which can be obtained gratit by applying to " the Rev. Paul Buquet, DirectorGeneral of the CEavre Expiatoire, La Chapelle Moutligeon, Or me France," to whom all inquiries should be addressed.
