Sir John Pope Hennessey, in a le'ter to the Rev. Father O'Halloran, says that he goes further in the matter of Home Role than even Mr. Parnell seems disposed to go. " The Home Rule," he saye, " I should like to see — whether we can get it from England is another mutter — ia what has worked so well in tbe self-governing colonies. This would give us complete control of everything local— not only complete control of the land, the police, and all appointments, but control of our customs and our fiscal system."
In answer to some foolish query anent Catholic countries and popular illiteracy, the New York Sun says : "If the R:>nian Catholic Church ruled in reality the so-called Roman Catholic countries, it might te held responsible for the illiteracy of the peoji'e of those countries ; but the Roman Catbolic Church does not rule any conntry now. The Roman Church has a firmer hold over the Province of Quebec in Canada than in any so-CHlled. Roman Catholic country of Europe ; yet the percentage of the attendance at the schools there is seventy-nix per cent, of the total number enrolled, whi!e tbe ay rage of tot entire Dominion is sixty-five per cont."
