DUNEDIN CATHOLIC LITERARY SOCIETY.
The weekly meeting of this Society was held in the Christian Brothers' School on Wednesday, the 23th ult. The chair was occupied by the President (the Rev, P. Lynch), and the attendance of members was up to the average. Mr, John (Jouains was duly elected a member of the Society, and Mes6re. A. Court and A. Mcllroy were proposed for membership. Mr. M. English real a paper on " Electric Telegraphy — Its Giowth and Developments" (which appears elsewhere in this issue), and created a very favourable impression, as it was bis firtt appearance before tue Society. In proposing a heaity vote of thanks to Mr. English for his instructive paper, Mr. J. Eager characterised it a 9 a clear and concise history of electricity as applied to telegraphy. Tbe literary style of the paper was admitted to bd excellent, while all stupid technical terms were rightly avoided. Mr. George Sullivan recited " A Slave's Dream," by Longfellow, in good style, and Mr. W. Woods selected for his initial performance before the Society a reading on "Syllogisms," which-was much appreciated. As the St. Vinceut de Paul concert takes place oa the 2nd in?t., at which several members of the Society assist, there will be no meeting on that evening. Mr. John b\ Perrin has very kindly consented to read a paper on "Ruins" betore the fc>ocieiy on Wednesday, the 9th mat,, when it is hoped there will be a large attendance. Ihe meeting was brougbt to a close with the usual vote of thanks to the chair.
