THE EXHIBITION.

shall we say about it? Everybody praises wK^lySfc) and con S ratu^ ates Dunedin and all New v^vPs^ Zealand on its success so far. It is difficult yftrpMtt^ to add to the encomiums of so many able i* writers and judicious critics, who have un\(&§&L, g rucl gingly am * eloquently sent their striking reports throughout the world. If we to-day essay to write a line or two about it, it is not with the idea that we are about to publish something new 3 or anything that others have neglected. But as journalists we may be permitted to put on record in our own journal our impressions and our sentiments regarding this important effort to stimulate industry, foster a spirit of generous rivaliy, and emphasise the conviction that depression is a thing of the past. In the first place, too much credit cannot be given to the enlightened and patriotic gentlemen who initiated the Dunedin Exhibition of IBb9, and who with so much ability and disinterestedness have brought it to its present stage of completeness and success. For, so far, it ia wonderfully complete and successful, and we hope, whilst we entertain no doubt on the point, that financially it will prove a still greater success than its most sanguine friends had at any time anticipated. We have seen many Exhibitions in many lands, several of them vaster, but we have never seen an Exhibition that did more credit to the people that initiated and carried it on than this one of Dunedin does to the people of this city and Colony. The other Exhibitions which we have seen were held by peoples whose numbers amounted to millions, belonging to ancient nations, amongst whom the arts and sciences had ilour shed for centuries. When, then, it is borne ia mind that this Dunedin Exhibition is an effort on the part of a country only fifty years old and containing only about three-quarters of a million of inhabitants, it must be admitted by all who took part in the grand opening ceremony ©f Tuesday, and then visited the several avenues and bays, examining their varied and beautiful contents, that never has any Exhibition done more honour to a people the Dunedin Exhibition does to the people of Kew

Zealand. The Dunedin Exhibition, in its completeness and beauty and the number of its exhibits, compares favourably with any Exhibition that has ever been held. It would be in vain for us to attempt to give an adequate account of all that is to be seen in this hxhibition, and the ablest effort, we fancy would fail to enable the reader at a distance to' realise what the Exhibition really is. All we can now say 'I : let all who wish to know what it really is, come and see J>r themselves and judge for themselves. New Zealand is not afraid or ashamed, nor need it be, to invite the whole world to Dunedin, for there is here an Exhibition that would be a credit to any city in the world of four times its population. We beg to congratulate our fellow-citizens on their pluck, success, and patriotism, and wish them still greater success in the revival of trade and commerce and agricultural development.
