Slight earthquake shock at Timaru.— Gold rush south of Hokitika — Coroner's jury at Newctstle, N.S.W.. finds late mining accident due to weakness of pillars supporting roof ; censures over-man for not giving warning of danger. —Queen invited by Irish public bodies to visit Ireland. — Gladstone congratulated by Queen and Prince of Wales on golden wedding : feted by National Liberal Club.— Earl of Fife created Duke, preparatory to Royal marriage. — Parliamentary return shows Queen's savings from civil list a million and a half, exclusive of all else.

Mid Cork, sentenced one month hard labour for spitting on police.— Shah of Peisia visits Paris.
