REEFTON CATHOLIC SCHOOLS.

(Inangahua Times, December 24.) The Rev. Father Gog»an. S.M., Fiofessor of St. Patrick's College Wellington, examined the Catholic Schools of Retfton on last Tueeday and Wednesday, and on yesterday read the following more than satisfactory report before tue School Committee assembled for the purpose in the girls'schooi .—. —

From the above schedule we get the following results . —Twenty two boys were presented, of whom five failtd ; the average of passes is therefore 77*27 per cent. Fort}-six girls were presented, of whom tea failed ; the average of parses is therefore 78.25 per cent. After reading his report the rev. gentleman spoke thus . —'Rev. I Father Holland, gentltinei',—lt is indeed a pleading task for me to be able to give you such a satisfactory report. The result is far beyond my expectation ; the more bo, and to bustain me iv this, 1 can safely appeal to the gentlemen who wen: kind enough to attend during the whole examination, as I was in no way lenieut with the children, but bent on passing those only who were far above the standard. The arithmetic papers set wire hard —perhaps too much to. However, one boy and gul obtained 80 . and trie only girl that failed in the Gth t-tandaid failed in arithmetic. This in itself well tor the teaching power of the presjnt sch >ol staff. The wrum.' ot the 4ih standard of the buys was b^low the aver i<,*o. Ia the 4 h standard of tho gnls there was one child, and her an-wri >{,r, r won applaune from all the gen ilemen present, and 1 miv . w lthou; Hatter). *-ay that I have never got better answers from any child m the tumc* fi audani. As for the failures, which iv all nuuib^i 15, \ou mus; eoi bider that 10 of theae children have i ot, in some casi s, an ;t\ciage .i11 • ndaiice of more than one day in the wee k. Their f uluie, then, is not owing to the teachers, but t~> rerai'-sness of the i'ar< tita in sen ling them to bchool. 1 have btcn asked to give my opiriun about the Hh"ol, aud it in this i You have a well-taught school. L t the Catholic pauii'B of l;«efton encourage the teachcis by sending their cuiKiren regularly to school, and in a short time you will have a school be,cond to none iv theeo parts.

The Rev. Father Holland then rose and thanked Father Goggan for bii kindness in examining the school so thoroughly, and expressed bit satisfaction «t the more than gratifying report. He concluded by giving the children vacation until the 28th of January. At a meeting of the Catholic School Committee held yesterday evening the following very important resolution was unanimously carried, via. — That all school fees be abolished.— Our Catholic friends hare thus made a step in the right direction, and as their school is free and well tanght, parents of tha various denomination* will gladly embrace the opportunity of giving their children the liberal aad thoroughly moral education which is ever the aim of the Catholic Kbools.
