" The Irish National Leagus, 43 O'Connell street upper, Dublin, July 13, 1888. To D. O'Sullivan Esq., Wellington. Dear Sir,- 1 enclose herewith a formal receipt for £100 handed to our treasurer by tbe Right Hon. the Lord Mayor. Permit me to convey the best thanks of the organisation for this generous remittance, as well as for tbe encouraging words contained in your letter. It is true, indeed, that tin people are patiently bearing the persecution they are receiving with a heroic fortitude worthy of the great cause they are so deeply interested in. The great consolation to the people is the magnificent support tbey are receiving from the English people and the assurance of their success in the near future. Again thanking you for the liberal subscription forwarded by the members of the branch of the League and other sympathisers in Wellington, I remain, dear sir, yours faithfully. T. Harrington, Hon. Secretary." After the enrolment of new members and the payment of subscriptions for the month, the meeting resolved itself into an entertainment committee, with a view to augmenting the funds by an entertainment at an early date in the Theatre Royal. It was decided to arrange an entertainment in about a month's time, tickets to be meanwhile printed and widely circulated for sale.
During the winter the Wellington branch has inaugurated a aeries of monthly social meetings which are being largely attended by
members and their friends. Readings, recitations, songs and original papers make np the programme of each evening. The plan is a good one. and has already done much to popularise the movement in the capital. The next social meeting takes place on the first Monday in October, and as several ladies and gentlemen have promised their assistance, the patrons of the League can reckon on spending a pleasant evening. There is no charge for admission, but the usual subscriptions are handed in and acknowledged during the evening, and n:w members are enrolled.
