GREYMOUTH.

mineral exhibits. They propose forwarding quartz from Cedar Crdek, auriferous and argentiferous ore from Bangitoto, marblo from Orwell Sound, lithographic stone from Parwi Kiki, copper ore and coal from Haast, Olmne rock from OliTine Banje, nickeliferous Bind from ueorge layer, annferous sand from sea-beadiee, greenstone from iuimara, fire clay and limestone from Camelback. and othsr exhibits. T»e Mayor of Greymoutb, and the County Chairm-m Grey County, nave received similar communications to forward additional exhibits, and the only action so far taken is that the County Council hare instructed their engineers to ascertain the cost of procuring a ton of black sand from the North Beach that they may forward. The Evening btar, the Mayoi'a oigan, treats the matter indifferently and considers n was done by a lew of the goldfields membera to obtain che-sp popularity. No doubt be never looked for cheap popularity, and had he suuceeied in affixing the magic let'ers M.H.R. to hia name at the lust election he would not think of looking for cheap popularity. Opposition to those holding M.H.R. to their name maybe put down to political bias. Notwithstanding the cheap popularity, it is to be hopei for the credit of the Colony, and io the interest of its vast mineral resources, that, while there is yet time, all parties will vie with each other in having New Zealand minerals adequately represented at the Melbourne International Exhibition. A disastrous fire occurred at Nelson Creek on the 12th insr., whereby Mr. William Claughessy'a two-storeyed hotel, Mr. Johnston's residence, and Mr. Jamieson'a private house aad butcher's shop, were burned to the ground. The whole township was in imminent danger, and would have been totally destroyed but far the fire happening on Saturday evening, when all the miners about the township were in. All those present worked bravely to save what they oould, and eventually succeeded in confining the flames to the above houses. Great sympathy is fdlt for the sufferers. Mr. Claughessy ia the M.C.U. fjr the riding, and widely respected. His hotel was insured f irl £300, but it will not cover one-third of his loss. The hydraulic cranes on the wharf were set to work this week loading the Kaiwatiri and Boaamond. The cranes seem to work very well, but there is room for improvement ia the manner in which the coal trucks are taken to and from the cranes. At present it taken three minates or over to put a truck of coal aboard, but this will hare to ba reduced by one half to sesure the dispatch they wish for. The cranes work noiselessly and pick up a tru^k of coal as if it bad been only a few pounis weighl. There is no screaming or shouting the same as had to ba done at tbe gadgets and that great danger to ped«stenaris' lives ani limbs -the gidge's— incline can now be done away with. J'hedispu'e bctwrei the contractors far St. Patrick's chuich and the committee over ihe former's enormous bill of extras is now being settled by arbitration, Mayor Keddell having been appointed a* arbitrator. rr An enterprising citizen here, who has lately launched in the coal anl shipping business, has deciled to run the p.«. Areti from here direct to Melbourne during |the exhibition, should he get sufficient inducement to do so. Beturn tickets are to be very ieasonable and will include a stay of ten days ia Melbourn?, during whichlthe passengers can sl( ep and have their meals on board. He is deserving of success, as tha charges of th) Union Co. are realy prohibitive to persons of limited mean*, and with moderate charges a great many would avail themselves of the opportunity to take a trip to the exhibition.
