DUNEDIN CATHOLIC LITERARY SOCIETY.
The usual weekly meeting of the above Society was held m the Christian Brothers' Schoolroom on September 21, when the chair was occupied by the Rev. W. Burke, president. Mr. James Eagar read a paper on " Life," in which he put forth some good thoughts, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded for his eftort. Mr. J. G. McKelvey gave a humorous recitation, and succeeded in amusing the members. The usual compliment to the rev. president terminated the meeting.
The Society met again on September 28, the rev. president in the chair. Mr, J. B. Dundon read an essay on " The English Language." He gave some interesting facts concerning his subject, and dealt with its " effete orthography," which, he thought, might with much advantage be subjected to a radical change. A vote of thanks was passed. Mr. P. Carolin contributed a reading, which proved instructive to members. A hearty vote of thanks to the rev. president concluded the business.
