CANTERBURY CATHOLIC LITERARY SOCIETY.

Christchurch, March 4, 1887 The usual weekly meeting of the above Society took place on Tuesday evening last, Ist inst. The chair was occupied by Mr. Lonargan, President, the attendance being fair, about 35 members were present. After confirming the minutes of previous meeting and transacting some other routine business, the members next proceeded with, the consideration of the programme for the evening, which was "original papers." The first on the list was one by Mr. Belmer on " The Vice of Gambling," in which the writer condemned in no unmeasured terms this great and growing evil, and also its twin brother horse-racing, both of which he considered to be productive, of untold miseries, even more so than intemperance. He also gavo several examples in illustrations of the disastrous consequences arising from gambling, which had come under his notice. Mr. Cooper, one of our junio.r but at the same time most talented and industrious members, read an interesting and well-written paper on " Akaroa " in which the writer gave a very graphic and accurate description of that picturesque locality. The various details of the paper were rendered clearer by ihe exhibition of a sketch of the town and harbour, drawn by himself for the occasion. After the papers were dully criticised and the writers thanked, the meeting terminated with prayer in the usual manner.
