January 4, 1887. ANNUAL EXAMINATION OP ST. OANICE'S SCHOOL. I have much pleasure in forwarding the report of the annual report of St. Canice's school, which took place upon the school breaking up for Christmas vacation. It had been intended to distribute the prizes as usual on the last day of the examination, but owing to some overBight they had not arrived in time, therefore, the Rev. Father Walshe announced to the children that the distribution of prizes would take place on the day that school re-opens after the holidays. He also informed them that four weeks' holidays would be given this year, an announcement that was received with cheers and loud demonstrations of delight. The examination, which was both oral and written, was of a thoroughly searching nature, and was conducted by the Rev. Father Walshe and Messrs. M. Organ and J. Lempfert (the latter young gentlemen, perhaps it is not out of place to mention, recently returned from Germany, after an absence of four years, where he obtained his education), some other gentlemen also assisted the examiners from time to time. The committee some time agorequested the Inspector of Schools for the district (Mr. Hodg son; to examine St. Canice's School, but that gentleman declined. The children were examined at length in Christian doctrine, which, of course, holds a prominent place in this school. Some very good recitations were given, and the drawing was very neatly executed. The examiners expressed themselves well pleased with the result of the year's teaching, which showed satisfactory progress, and was very creditable to the teachers, Mr. M. D. Regan, and Miss A. Knight. These teachers are assisted by a monitor, tbis being rendered necessary owing to the large number in the junior classes. The total number on the roll is 136, and the number present during the examination was 111. Some of tbe best pupils in the higher Standards were unavoidably absent during the examination. It may be mentioned here that on the breaking up of the school, a large quantity of lollies, kindly presented by Mrs. Simon, was scattered about the school grounds to the great delight of the youngsters, who scrambled and enjoyed themselves immensely, and finally went away in the best of humour. Several ladies and gentlemen hare signified their intention of presenting prizes tor the day of distribution — the 17th inst. Canice's School, has in her resignation to the school committee. Much regret is felt at her departure, principally amongst the pupils, with whom she was a great favorite. A LAMENTABLE FATAL ACCIDENT. One of the saddest accidents that has occurred in the district for some time past took place to-day at Addison's, whereby a promising five-year son of Mr. G. Lamplough met his death. It appears the boy was climbing on the wheel of his father's dray when the horae started and the poor little fellow was thrown beneath the wheel and crushed to death. Much sympathy is expressed for the bereaved parents in their trouble. CIVIL SERVICE HONOURS. Mr. John Kennedy, probationer in the Addison's Flat school, hag just passed the junior Civil Service examination most creditably. He is to be congratulated upon his success, which is solely due to his own BtudioHs luclination and perseverance. Would that we had many more such Catnolic young men in our midst.
