Mr. Donald Stronach (on behalf of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited) reports for the week ending October 7, as follows :—: —

Fat Cattle.— 229 were yarded at Burnside to-day for the week's requirements. Nearly the whole of this number were low prime quality. Biddings were fairly brisk, but prices scarcely reached last week's. Best bullocks brought £9 10s to £11 17s 61 ; light weights, £5 10s to £8 10s ; cows, up to £10 10s. We sold drafts on account of James Meehan (Makikihi) and others at quotations, and quote beef 22s 6d «o 25s per 1001 b. Fat Calves.— There were only three penned, which sold readily at up to 255. Fat Sheep.— 2,o49 were penned, of which 784 were merinos and the balance cross-bred, nearly all good to prime quality. There were also included in these 228 show cross-bred wethers and 128 do. ewes. The trade did not compete with much animation, and prices this week were somewhat lower. One or two pens heavy-weight crossbred brought up to 17s 6d ; good to prime, 14s to 16s ; medium, 11s 6d to 13s 9d ; shorn cross-bred, 10s 3d to Us 3d ; shorn cross-bred ewes, 10s ; merino wethers (in the wool), 8s 3d to 11s. We sold on account of Mr. James Scott Keilor, Waiwera, and others, crossbred mixed at 12s 9d ; and merino wethers at 8s 3d to 10s ; and quote mutton 2£d per lb. Fat Lambs. — Sixty-nine were penned, and sold under fair competition at up to 13s. Pigs.— 2lo were penned. The most of these were porkers and bacon pigs, with a few suckers and slips. The market to-day was the most sluggish of any experienced within the last few seasons, and great difficulty in making sales of porkers and baconers at a reduction of from 7s 6d to 10s each. Store Cattle and Sheep.— We have no transactions to report, but have some inquiry for well-bred bullocks, quiet, and in forward condition, suitable for paddock fattening ; and we look forward to a good demand in the course of a few weoks for cattle of the above description. Wool.— Press and private cablegrams to hand from London since our last report show that sales are not quite so active ; the market is improved, and the competition is weaker. By San Francisco mail due in Auckland on the 20th inst. we expect price catalogues for the first few daj's of the sale, when values will be better determined. Sheepskins.— At our weekly sale on Monday, at which there waa a full attendance of buyers, who competed briskly, every lot on a lengthy catalogue was cleared at prices slightly in advance of those obtained last week. Country dry cross-breds.low to medium, brought Is 2d to 3s 6d ; full-wool. 5s Id ; do. do. merino, low to medium, brought lid to 3s 3d; full-wool, 4a; butchers' green cross-breds, 2s 9d, 3s, 3s 3d, 3s 6d. 3s Bd, 3s 9d, 3s lOd, 3s •Id ; do. do. merino 2s sd, 2s Sd, 2s lid, 3s 2d, 3s 4d, 3s sd, 3s 6d ; green pelts, 4d ; lambs 3dto6d. Rabbilskins.— On Monday we submitted a fair catalogue of, medium to good winter skins. Rome of these were prime, but mixed, up with skins taken off poisoned rabbits which were too long dead. This mode of classing reduces the value of the good, and the result is disappointing to the vendor. We had all the buyers in the trade in attendance and competition was brisk, every lot being disposed of as as follows — R. 1 bag, 6|d ;do 3 do. 12^d ; KO, 4 do, 3M ; JR, 2 do., 10V1 ; AM, 3 do., 12jd : KO, l|bale and 2 bags, 12|i ; JK in diamond, 5 bags, 5d ; EJ. 2 do, 9 id ; do., 2 do., 12$ d ; KO, 2 pesand 2 bags, Is Id ; GO on line. 1 bale, G£d : WB in square, 3 bales, 10£ d ; A 2 in square, 3 do 12jd per lb. Hides. There is a good demand for all oming forward at late quotations, viz , 2d to 2|d for butts and slippy ; 3d for light ; 3Ji to 3 1i for medium ; 3?d to I^l for fair to good heavy weight, sound, clear and free from cuts. en Tallow —The market continues dull and unsatisfactory, email lotsof country-rendered find purchasers for local consumption at prices similar to la&t week's quotations, viz., for inferior and mixed, 14s to lfi h ; medium, 17s to 19s ; good to prime, 20s lo 21s; rough fat is lower, selling at 9s to 11s per cwt. Grain.— Wheat meets with ready sale. There is scarcely any prime in the market, and very little coming forward ; medium has had good sa'e during th» week at from 21 to 3d advance on prices obtainable for this quality previously; fowls wheat is also scarce, and in demand. We quote prime milling white velvet, 3s 4cl to 3S3 S 3d ■ Tuscan, 3s 4d to 3s i^d : medium, 3s Id to 3s 3d ; inferior and fowl's wheat, 2s 8d to 2s lid. -Oats : The demand continues faiily active, principally for shipment. A few lots have been purchased at a slight conc^ion on last week's rates, but holders of prime bright feed and milling are firm and late pr.ces but little altered. We quote stout br.ght milling 2s to 2s Id; bright short feed, Is lHd to 2s: medium Is lid; dimp and disc.lored Is 7d to Is 10 1.-Barley • Prime samples are inquired for, but little offering. Milling and feed is m fair demaud, but the simply being limited tiansactious are only sm .11.— Kyegrass seed . There is a better demand existing, and any good dean parcels from all pasture would meet a ready sale.-Cocksfoot : The demand is not quite equal to the supply, and sales slow.
