DECADENCE OF ENGLAND.

A Loudon paper, Vanity Fair, gives the following facia and figures illustrating the decadence of Kngland. Referring to the big promises made by Gladstone's partisans at the beginning of his admiuiit ration, Vanity Fair nays :—: — "We were promised cheaper Government, cheaper food, and greater prosperity. We find that, so far from these promises being verified, they have been everyone falsified by the event. Oar Imperial Government is dearer by eight millions ; our Imperial and Local Government Board together dearer by nearly ten millions. We have 398,397 fewer acres under cultivation for corn, green, and other crops ; we hnve 50,077 fewer horses, 129,119 fewer cattle, and 4,789,738 fewer sheep in the country ; we hive, in spite of the Land Act, and the allegation of increased prosperity. 14,828 more pauper* in Ireland, on a decreasing population; we find there are 115,092 more emigrants leave their country in a year because they cannot get a living in it ; we lose annually 349 more vessels and 1534 more livea at sea. The only element of consolation that these figures bave to show is that we have 4627 more policemen in tho country. In shoir, we are morelackinsr in everything we want, more abounding in everything we don't want. The price of everything we have to sell has gone down ; the pi ice of everything we bave to buy has gone up ; and what has gone up most is the price of government. Dearer government ; dearer bread ; dearer beef ; dearer mutton ; dearer money: cheaper pig-iron ; less corn, potatoes, turnips, grass and hops ; fewer horses'; fewer cattle ; fewer nheep ; more paupers ; more emigrants ; more losses of life and propeity at s"a — and more policemen."
