INVERCARGILL CATHOLIC LITERARY SOCIETY.

The usual weekly meeting of theabive society was held on Thursday evening, October 9. The attendance was very satisfactory. One candidate was ba.loted for and duty elected. The programme for the evening was then opened by Mr. D. Bradley, who showed a keen appreciation of the author's ideal iv ' Fonteaoy," or " Charge of the Irish Biigade." He evinced also careful preparation and considerable histrionic ability, being followed by Mr. M. O'Brien, who engaged the sympathies of the audience witb his rendition of "The Piogiess of Madness"; he came very near peifeciion in his rendering of it. The President then stated that he believed there were several gentlemen present who were anxious to have their heads read, and requested Mr. Lawrence if he would be kind enough to do so, to which be consented, and seemed to be thoroughly at home in executing his abilities as a phrenologist upon eight gentlemen who bubmitted themselves for examination, with a wish ot ascertaining their bad qualities as well as their good ones, whiub the examiner in either case did not conceal, and at the conclusion bia remarks were criticised individually by the persons examined, and with a few exceptions gave geueral satisfaction. The audieuce sueiued to enjoy it much better than the persons whose characters were read, and were also very liberal in their applause. The programme for tho next meeting wa9 then considered. After several subject* were proposed, it was fiually agreed to that the subject for debate be '-Suould capita punishment be abolished." After sides were chosen for the affirmative and negative, the meeting closed iv due foim.
