HIBERNIAN SOCIETY'S FETE.

The tenth annual fete under lhe auspices of the Hibernian Society, Dunedm, was held on the Caledonian Society's grounds on St Stephen's Day. It was the principal gathering in the neighbourhood of the city, and over 2000 persons visited the grounds, which were in excellent order. The various events were very closely contested especially the 120 yards foot race in all the heats— Mr A Austin's handicapping giving general satisfaction. The great event of the day, however, was the wrestling, in which the spectators took the keenest interest, as it was known that L'Estrange, if successful, would win the Society's gold medal— he having held it against all comers the two previous years. For the first time, we believe, the champion, George Robertson entered as a competitor, in collar and elbow style and although not successful his great good humour always wins for him the admiration of the on-lookers. The Society, wisely we think increased the prizes for Cumberland style, this had the effect of brincmg together some of the best men in the Colony, a grand display of strength and science being the result. The judges and stewards are to be congratulated for the admirable manner in which they dis charged their various duties, the sports being the best ever held by the Society, and giving entire satisfaction to the public. The Naval Brigade Band under the able conductorship of Mr. Charles Coombes added much to the enjoyment of visitors by performing a choice Selection of national and popular music in a highly efficient manner The following were the results of the various events.
