PETER'S PENCE AT KUMARA.

TO THE EDITOB S.Z. TABLET.

Sir, — In the issue of your valuable paper bearing date Dec. 7th, which I have seen only to-day, I find that Dr. Bakewell, in his recent written speech to the members of the Canterbury Catholic Literary Society, mentions having heard certain remarks from me to my congregation, during his visit to the West Coast. I did express my dissatisfaction publicly that the collection of Peter's Pence was not more successful, and the principal reason I assigned was that the usual mode of collecting it being this year, for certain reasons, departed from, advantage was taken of the mode of collecting. I also stated that I thought political motives might have interfered with the success of the collection, not (as Dr. Bakewell asserts) that I thought political motives were the chief cause of the collection being rather unsuccessful, lam very pleased to be able to state, furthermore, that, since I made the above collection, I have learned with pleasure that political motives had little or nothing to do with the matter ; and when the entire amount was gathered in from the generous people of Kumara, the collection far our Holy Father the Pope proved a tolerable success.— l am, etc., Kumara, Dec. 15, 1883. M. Walsße.
