In the Swiss Canton of Appenzell the people have two advantages. They farm in common and the land is their own. "Well, as Mr. Mill cays, the land of every country belongs to the people of the country, but generally the people do not possess it. Isolated individual farming is undoubtedly one cause of poverty, but this is no argument in favour of the exclusive ownership of land. For where land is tilled in common and owned in common there is less poverty and much more intelligence than under the rule of landlordism, for this means rent-tribute. — Burton on land.
