Mrs. Macmillan, the aged mother of the Rev. John Macmillan, Free Church minister of Ullapool, has been evicted from her holding on the estate of the Earl of Morton — a holding she has occupied for more than 40 years without being a farthing in arrears. This exercise of landlord power has caused intense indignation in the Highlands, especially as Mr. Macmillan, as is well known> has taken a leading part in the defence of the Leckmelm crofters. — Correspondent of Nation. We regret to note the death this week of Mrs. Cahill, the mother of the patriotic leader of the Leinster Leader and ex-suspect, Mr. Patrick Cahill, L.L.D. Mrs. Cahill came of a brave and honoured ancestry. Her father was Thaddeus Hickey, formerly of Carlo w, a man who, in his day, was a ,der of the United Irishmen, gave proof of true Irish courage, and was sentenced to death by a court-martial in Athy. We may add that Mr. Hickey, though, left for death, was not executed, for Colonel Mahon of the 9th Lancers, who had treated with him a few days before, happened at the last moment to enter the room where the court-martial -was sitting and ordered him to be set free. Mrs. Cahill has left behind her more than one distinguished son, for she is the mother not ©nly of Dr. Cahill already mentioned, but also of the very fiev. ThomasJCahill, S.J., who has been for many years known in Melbourne as one of the most eloquent preachers and profound theologians of the great and illustrious Order of Jesus in Australia. To him and to his brother at home we ofier the expression of our respectful sympathy with them in the bereavement they have sustained, — Nation.
