Mr. Donald Stbonach (on behalf of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited) reports for the week ending February 1, as follows :—: — Fat Cattle.— For to-day's market 280 head were yarded, of which 42 were stores. Demand was very slow, and no improvement was manifest on last week's prices. Bullocks realised from £6 17s 6d to £12, and cows £5 12s 6J to £7 10s. We sold a draft, on account of Mr. Alexander Thomson, of bullocks at £7 to £7 12s 6d, cows at £6. To-day's quotation is 20s per 1001 b. Fat Calves. — Ten were yarded, and fetched from 4s to 9s 6d. Fat Sheep. — A full average supply was to hand, numbering 2,208 head, prices for which showed no improvement on those of laßt week, Crossbreds realised from 8s 3d to 10s 9d, and merinos 6s 6d to 7s 6d. We sold drafts of crossbreds on acconnt of the following constituent!: Messrs. J. and S. Wilson, 8s 6d to 9s ; John Duncan, 9s ; Ross Bros., 8s 3d ; A. M'Laren, 10s 3d ; Little Bros., 10s 9d. We quote prime mutton ljd per lb. Fat Lambs. — 550 were to hand, and sold at from 6s 9d to 7s 9d, We disposed of several pens on account of Messrs. Wo. Phand, Boss Bros., and Little Bros, at 6s 9d to 7s 6d.
Fat Pigs.— Sixty-one head were sold, up to 30s each. Store Cattle ia forward condition are in fair inquiry. ,We sold 107 head at Mosgiel on 26th January on account of Messrs. M'Kay Brothers, steers realising £2 7s 6d to £5 5s ; cows and heifers; <2£s
to £2 17s ; yearlings, £2 per head. •' . Store Sheep. — Owing to the bad prospects of the turnip crop in certain districts the market is not quite so active, although really good lots of crossbreds can be readily placed. Sheepskins. — We held our usual auction on Monday, which was well attended, and a rather improved spirit was manifested in the biddings. We report late prices well maintained. Full-woolled crossbreds fetched up to 5s 3d, and merinos 4s 2d ; dry skins, Is 9d to 2s lid ; butchers' pelts, 8d to lid ; lambskins, Is to Is 7d each ; and greasy skins (in bales), 4§d to s£d per lb. Rabbit-skins. — We offered several parcels this week, but competition was not brisk, and previous prices were not supported. Suckers and pups sold from 6d to 9d, and fairly grown winter skins Is to Is 2£d per lb. Hides. — We have placed all to band at last week's rates — inferior and shipping parcels at 3d to 3£d per lb, and good-conditioned heavy weights 4d. Tallow.— Local demand was a little slacker this week, and prices consequently rather easier. We sold well-rendered tallow at up to 295, and rough fat at up to 19s 6d per cwt. ; inferior in proportion.
Grain. — Wheat : The market continues quiet, and, pending the arrival of the new crop, very few sales have transpired. We quote, as last week, prime milling, 4s to 4s 3d ; medium, 3s 6d to 3d 9d ; inferior and fowls' feed, 2s 6d to 3s 3d per bushel.— Oats : Feed oats are in moderately good inquiry, principally for coastal and Australian ports. The market therefore continues firm at last week's prices —say, light milling, 2s to 2s Id 5 good feed, Is lid to 2s ; inferior and discoloured lots, Is 8d to Is lOd. — Barley : Nothing doing.
