THE MISSION AT PORT CHALMERS.
The Eev. Father Newport, in entering upon the pastoral charge of Port Chalmers, commenced his duties here by affording the people the advantages of a Mission, the chief object of which, as explained at the opening, was to give the people the means of going through the exercises of the Jubilee with fervour and devotion. The Mission was conducted by the Rev. W. Burke, St. Joseph's Church, Dunedin. The exercises commenced at seven o'clock each morning with Mass and catechetical instruction, and terminated in the evening with devotions and a sermon on some of the leading Christian truths. The attendance was good — some of the congregation showing the warmth of Irish faith by coming a distance of four or five miles. The Mispion was concluded on last Sunday evening, the llih December, by Vespers, sermon, Benediction of the most Blessed Sacrament, and renewal of baptismal vows ; and notwithstanding the continuous downpour of rain during the whole evening, all the seats in the church were occupied. Great praise is due to Miss Hill, Miss Drumm, Messrs. Smith, Corrigan, Ennis, Carlton, etc.. who, despite the inclemency of the day, drove from Dunedin to assist in the choral part of the ceremony. It is to be hoped that those who attended the Mission will long retain its fruits, and now that the Rev. Father Newport bas taken up his residence in Port Chalmers, the Catholic population of the Port and its neighbourhood will have an ample opportunity of properly and regularly attending to their religious duties.
