The tenants of Mr. Parnell have addressed a statement to the Press completely exonerating the hon. gentleman from the charges made against him hy Col. Dennis, J.P.

This week there have come to hand, from twe or three different districts in the South and West, some queer stories of encounters between police patrols and what are called armed parties of the peasantry. It is said that in the west of the county of Cork, in the neighbourhood of Headford in Galway, and near Ballisodare in Sligo, shots have actually been enchanged in such encounters. It is curious, however, that no one on either tide Juts been, hit at any one of the three places, though in the Cork melee alone no less than seven rounds appear to have been delivered by the valiant men of the K.I.C. It is true that at Headford three men were arrested after the alleged firing, and that at Ballisodare a man •' armed with a large iron bar" was similarly arrested, but what evidence there is that those persons had committed any offence against the law is not stated. We may add that for the conveyance of the Headford men to Galway jail, cars from the latter town, which is about sixteen, miles distant, had to be procared. The local car-owners would not trade with the police. — Nation, Jam. 28.

During the recent interview of the Bishop of Meath with the Holy Father, his Lordship made a significant commentary on the land question, by observing that in a space of twenty years 78,000 of his flock had been driven from their homes and dispersed. A journey through the eileat meadows of Meath is ample confirmation of the figures.
